What is FERPA and why is it relevant?
“FERPA” is the acronym for the federal Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act. It protects students’ personal information.
For Inclusive Access Students who receive access to their course materials through their institution, RedShelf is a “school official” with “a legitimate educational interest” under FERPA.
RedShelf receives certain Personally Identifiable Information (PII) of students as long as their privacy is respected and information kept confidential.
What information does RedShelf collect?
To provide digital course materials to Inclusive Access Students, RedShelf receives certain student information directly from the institution. This information includes your username, email address, and course and institution information.
We collect access rights information and user content including notes, highlights and other digital annotations, among others.
We may collect metadata such as browser, device, internet protocol (IP) address, and navigation data, among others.
How will RedShelf use this information?
RedShelf uses the collected information to:
Provide you as an IA Student with access to your learning materials from the first day of class
Authenticate you as an authorized End User and verifying your access rights
Prevent and address fraud, security, copyright or technical issues
Communicate about customer experience issues, account activity or general updates
Improve RedShelf products and services
To the extent you are an Inclusive Access student:
We will not use personal information for third-party advertisements or marketing on our website or Platform
We will not sell your personal information to any third parties
We will not re-target Inclusive Access students with ads based on site behaviors
Will RedShelf share any of my personal information?
We will not sell, disclose, or share personal information with any third party unless the terms of the Privacy Notice and FERPA allow it. Permitted disclosures may include:
Requirement by law
Exchanges with educational and content service partners as required for integration, accounting, or reporting purposes
In the event of a merger/sale
Sharing de-identified information
Can I revoke my consent to this Privacy Notice?
Like any RedShelf user, you can always unsubscribe from our platform. Your information may be pulled back in at a later date, though, through another IA course or program.
What data security does RedShelf have in place?
We use a combination of physical, managerial, and technical safeguards to protect our security and your personal information. You are responsible for the privacy of your login information and making sure this information is accurate.
What are my rights as an international user?
All RedShelf users are subject to this Privacy Notice and all data will be transferred to the United States, regardless of your location when accessing our Platform.
