The RedShelf application for students, the Shelf, is composed of a small set of core components to support the learning experiences. This section outlines those features.
App Header & Tabs
Upon accessing the Shelf, students, instructors, and TAs will notice a page header branded for RedShelf. This header is customizable and each institution may use their own logo.
Below the app header, users will see one or more tabs for each active term they are in, and one tab for “All Materials” to access any products they have access to.
Materials
The Shelf is organized into a tiled catalog of materials, sometimes by course, and sometimes ungrouped. The grouping depends on whether you are viewing materials for a specific term or for all materials you own.
Hover-over for title
Most materials feature their title prominently on the cover, but users can always hover over a cover image to see its title.
Default cover images
For those times when RedShelf doesn’t have a material’s cover image available, a default cover is rendered. The background color may vary from material to material, but each default cover image will feature the title and the material’s author (or as much of both as possible).
Types
Each item is also denoted by a material type badge, indicating whether the item is an eBook, Courseware, Physical Item, or any other item type that RedShelf supports.
Prices & Product Details
Finally, users can review the details of their course materials by clicking on the cover image to open the “Product Details” drawer. These include a product description, information such as material type and price, and any DRM restrictions like copy/paste allowances, and printing and offline usage maximums.
Most importantly, students access their eBooks here by clicking “Read Now”!
Account menu
The final primary component of the Shelf is the account menu, which is located in the top right of the page. Users may use this menu to sign out or contact RedShelf’s support team.
Accessibility controls
At RedShelf, we take accessibility seriously and ensure that our software is compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0. Our fully design system takes into account the needs of users with disabilities such as color blindness and low vision. We ensure our interfaces are easy to navigate with assistive technologies like screen readers and magnifiers. We also conduct tab checks to ensure that keyboard users can navigate the software effectively without a mouse. Our software is compatible with the most widely used screen reading software for people with visual impairments by undergoing JAWS screen reader checks.
RedShelf's commitment to accessibility extends to our eReader as well, which undergoes a Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT) evaluation to ensure it meets accessibility standards.
