Text-to-speech is a HUGE focus for RedShelf's development team, though we understand users might need more immediate solutions.
There are options based on which version of our eBook platform you are using. It's either version 5 or version 6. The easiest way to tell which version your eBook is running is by checking the color of the loading dots when you initially open your eBook.
VERSION 5 looks like this:
To enable text-to-speech on your Version 5 eBook, we first suggest trying the native reading apps on your device. These popular options don’t require you to download any additional software or plug-ins and can be used with our browser-based reader. If you are using a Mac/iPad/iPhone, their reading app is called VoiceOver, and if you are on a PC their reading app is called Narrator.
Here are instructions for both:
Mac VoiceOver Guide: https://help.apple.com/voiceover/info/guide/10.8/English.lproj/index.html
Windows Narrator Guide: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/22798/windows-10-narrator-get-started
If the above native readers aren't helpful, here are some apps we recommend trying with different web browsers:
- Read&Write for Chrome: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/readwrite-for-google-chro/inoeonmfapjbbkmdafoankkfajkcphgd?hl=en-US - this one is a free alternative to expensive screen reader programs.
- Read the Web by Kurzweil for Chrome: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/read-the-web/hdgegmlancchhhlkkddoiedlklgocffm?hl=en
- Read&Write for Microsoft Edge: https://www.texthelp.com/en-us/products/read-write/read-write-for-microsoft-edge/
If none of the above meets your needs on your Version 5 eBook or you have further questions, please reach out to firstname.lastname@example.org and our Accessibility Director will work with the publisher to release an accessible file to you. Please note that RedShelf needs to coordinate with your school's Disability Services Office in order to provide additional files or resources. If you are currently registered, please let us know who you work with at your school - name and email would be most helpful!
